How to Use
We use the word "bat" as an example. The types of information provided in the dictionary are labeled and defined below.
Here are definitions for each label:
- search bar: this is where you type the word you want to find
- word: what is being defined
- homonym number: a homonym is a word that has the same spelling or pronunciation as another word; the homonym number differentiates them in our dictionary
- pronunciation audio: press this button to hear the spoken word
- word forms: the various spellings of the word depending on how it is used in a sentence
- definition number: a word often has numerous definitions; this number differentiates them
- part of speech: this is how the word functions within a sentence
- definition: this is a written explanation of the word's meaning
- example sentence: a made up example showing the word in use
- definition picture: an image of what the word represents
- picture caption: a written explanation of the image
- word origin: a short history of where or how the word came to be
- synonyms: different words which have a similar meaning
- idioms: a usage of the word which is very strange and would not be understood based on its usual definitions
- notes: if there is any additional information about the word you will find it in the notes section
